Sculpture hall

Meet deities from Asia in our sculpture hall.

The Sculpture hall is a place for anyone interested in the Deities and religions of Asia. The three large Tibetan Buddhist sculptures from Mongolia are shown together for the first time in nearly a hundred years.

The hall of sculptures has 65 religious sculptures from the area which today is Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Mongolia and Burma (Myanmar). The sculptures represent Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and Jainism. Even though these religions today are practiced worldwide they are all based in Asia.

The objects were crafted in different locations and in different time periods stretching from the 3rd century to the 17th century, which means that they were made in a timespan stretching over 1400 years.

There are over 500 million people practicing Buddhism today, mostly in Asia. Jainism has about four million practitioners, mainly in India. Hinduism has about 890 million practitioners, whereof 94% live in India. Daoism is practiced by Chinese societies worldwide but has also influenced philosophical currents in many of Chinas neighboring countries.
